This workshop will introduce the participant to the basics of creating realistic art using the graphite pencil medium.  It will include demonstrations and examples of production materials, including:  drawing papers, pencil types, erasers, drawing surfaces, lighting and finishing sprays.  Each participant will create a 5 x 7 inch drawing using the grid transfer method.  The class project is shown at the right.

There is a modest list of materials required to participate in the workshop.  With the exception of the Project Kit, all materials are available at the JoAnn's Store.  Materials needed are:
  • Two #2 graphite pencils
  • Artist's Stump - Medium size
  • Pencil Sharpener (One in classroom but a hand-held one is useful)
  • Blue Reusable Adhesive (Type used for mounting posters,etc.)
  • Erasing Shield
  • White Plastic Eraser (Square or Retractable click style)
  • Small Brush (1" or so for removing debris from drawings)                                            
  • Artist's Clipboard or Piece of Foam Board (For use as a drawing surface

          *These items can be used for many future drawings!
 
 
 
The Workshop Session will cover the following areas:
 
    A.    Introduction of instructor and participants.
 
    B.    Examples of graphite drawings will be displayed to get an idea of the range of            subjects and techniques possible.
 
    C.    Examples of basic pencils, drawing tools and materials will be shown.
 
    D.    Locations and lighting for drawing will be discussed.
 
    E.    Using the practice paper, pencil drawing techniques will be explored,
           including application methods, blending, erasing and shading styles.
 
    F.    The concept of Value will be introduced.  Participants will create a value scale
           and learn the use of value viewers in creating the illusion of depth in
           drawings.
           
    G.    Introductory drawing exercises.  Participants will learn to establish Edges and
            to identify and illustrate Positive and Negative Space in a drawing.
 
    H.    Drawing from photo references using the Grid System. (This is also the
            beginning of the workshop drawing project.)
